The start of August means the start to the deadliest time of the year to be traveling on Wisconsin's roads. This weekend, Wisconsin State Patrol is teaming up with law enforcement agencies from 15 different states, from Massachusetts to Washington, to encourage safe driving.
The campaign, called the I90/94 Challenge, runs from Friday morning through Monday night. The goal is to go 96 hours without a single fatality in all 15 states. "When people are aware there are law enforcement officers around, people generally slow down and drive a lot more cautiously," said Trooper Jana Schmudloch. Traffic on roads is high in August, and Schmudloch said intoxicated driving is more common because of different summer activities. On average, over the last five years, 62 people died on Wisconsin roads during August. Schmudloch also cites tailgating as a main reason for many crashes. "Most of my accidents I respond to are from drivers not being able to react due to the reduced amount of space between the vehicle they're following," she said. Once a day, at least, Schmudloch said she gets a report of road rage. "People force people off the road, or people slamming on their brakes causing accidents because they're just trying to get the best of someone else," she said. As you head out the door and into your car, troopers remind you to be aware and be alert. "Be a defensive driver, slow down, make sure you have enough time... just be courteous," Schmudloch said. |
